Coloring pages can provide enrichment by providing pictures of numbers, letters, animals, and words, so that your child will expand their knowledge in a number of areas. Your child will receive the greatest educational benefit when the coloring pages bring all of these elements together, such as when there is a picture of an animal with it’s name written on the page, or when numbers are shown with the name of the number written out, or even a two-sided coloring page with one side showing the letter, number or word, and the other side of the page depicting an animal whose shape resembles the letter or number on the previous page. Take for example a coloring page that has a number one, along with a giraffe that is reminiscent of a number one in it’s shape. Your child will not only have fun coloring the number and animal, but their lesson will also include writing the number one and being introduced to a giraffe.
Thus, this is a hobby – all children appear interested to garner the coloring-pages and cards to enjoy their life at their best. You might speculate that, in what sort of colors or images my kid is interested in.
This sounds like an awful lot, doesn’t it! A good set of preschool worksheets should cover all of this, and more. In the preschool years, repetition is the key to learning, but you should look for worksheets that teach the same skills in a variety of ways. This not only prevents boredom setting in, but also reinforces the concepts by encouraging understanding as well. The importance of reading to your child cannot be emphasised enough, and you should encourage them to ’read’ as much as possible too.
Children first learn the sound a letter makes, for example a, like hat and bat. They then learn that that letter is called A. After learning the sound of the first letter they will combine two letters, for example they will learn b as in bat and ball and then they will learn bl to say blue and so on.
Perhaps the biggest benefit children get from coloring pages of animals or their favorite cartoon characters is the development of fine motor skills. This includes learning the proper way to hold the crayon, marker or colored pencil they are using to draw with. When supervising young children learning how to color use gentle instructions to encourage them to hold the writing implement near the tip, cradled between the tips of their thumb, index finger and middle finger. Many children grab the crayon in their fist. Correcting this improper usage is an important first step towards real penmanship.
With the new school year starting soon, many parents will be concerned about school readiness and looking for ways to help their children prepare for big school. While there are many preschool worksheets available, some are more useful than others in terms of versatility. There is a lot more to school readiness that just knowing the alphabet and counting to ten.
